favorite diaphragm calls
What is the make and model of your favorite diaphragm call? I've only been using pot calls but wanted to mix in some mouth calling.

Re: favorite diaphragm calls
Primos deadly double. But usually in close I use my mouth since my false teeth have somewhat effected my diaphragm calling. Earl

Re: favorite diaphragm calls
I like several of the ones Freddy made, curtain call, Last Call, etc. However, he quit making them.
I still have a couple in reserve, but I guess the best call is teh one you can blow and sound like a turkey. V

Re: favorite diaphragm calls
It really is a very personal choice. Some people have big mouths and some have small ones. I played trombone in my youth so I have a tendency to blow through a lot of single and double reed calls, plus I have a big mouth so I like 3 and four reed calls that are made for larger palates However, I would suggest starting with the least expensive single and double reed calls and get a feel for what you like. Some good advice that I received years ago was to get used to having it in your mouth first. I used to drive around with it in my mouth until I got used to it. Then just try to blow some kind of tune(mine was "Dixie") with it. That will give you an idea how to make different sounds. After that I found it rather easy to yelp with it. This may be more info than you asked for but I found it very helpful when I was starting.

Re: favorite diaphragm calls
I don't seem to use the diaphragm calls as much any more but whenI do it is usually the Primos sure double (stacked frame) or the proimos True Triple . True Triple is abut like having a sausage biscuit in your mouth for size but it seems to fit my mouth better . Yes. I Know, big mouth. I got the joke. Some of the stacked frame calls by primos are not easy to find in stores from. I usually order from Primos or beg one off a Primos pro staff guy..
Frame size to fit the roof of your mouth is the most critic thing in getting a good fit. If you can get he right angle against your tongue the rest is downhill. IMO

Re: favorite diaphragm calls
When Freddy was making and selling his own mouth calls, the Orange call was one of my favorites. Large frame. I can't handle a small frame a lick. I had teeth work done as a kid and they installed a pallet spreader, so I have a really big mouth.
PS. Back when I was driving to and from work (2 hour round trip). I used to put the old Knight and Hale DVD calling Turkey's in the car and practice a lot. IMO its not hard to make a nice yelp or a cutt. Purring is my downfall.

Re: favorite diaphragm calls
There are so many people making calls now. So, there are plenty of options. I think Denny Gulvas calls have the most realistic turkey in them. My dad used to make calls back in the 70's out of lead. It was like putting a paper weight in your mouth lol. Lots of options out there. I will help u in any way that I can.

Re: favorite diaphragm calls
I have a guy in SC making me some calls now. I'm getting 2 Ghost cuts, a cutter, and another he called Red Death. If you really want a call you can find. V
In recent years I've been liking the Quaker Boy Kee Kee and Boss Hen
Those are calls that have served me well in the past as well. Particularly the Boss Hen. As others have noted there are an incredible numbers of folks making diaphragm call now. And it’s hard to believe it take 8-9$ to buy one

Re: favorite diaphragm calls
Guys here is a secret. Top calls make calls very similar to BTD and Pure that Freddy carried. Thats really all I use now.
