Long Stand Off- Down to the Wire Again
Well if you remember last year I went till the last day without firing a shot and Killed a real nice bird on the last day. I started this year out by missing a bird at 15 Ft on the Sunday of opening Weekend. The day before on opening day I had 6 Long beards within 60 yards and they wouldn't commit (2 different places the one I hunted Saturday does not allow Sunday Hunting). I worked Birds just about every time I went out in every location with no kills in VA. I was able to Kill a couple birds in Nebraska but that's a story for another day.
I Left the house Saturday Morning @4 AM had to get to this old barley Field before daylight. I get to the man made ground blind at 5:20 and the Birds are already chirping but no gobbles yet. Evidently there was a fishing tourney on the river that morning boat after boat go screaming up the River. Still nothing Gobbling @ 5:45 I look down the tree line and watch a big Bird pitch into the field about 100 Yards away. I have my Avian Hen and the Funky Chicken Jake Decoys out trying to change things up a little. This bird stands in one place and struts back and forth forever and never gobbles. I'm making soft calls to him and he just looks in that direction eating and strutting. This goes on for an hour and half he hasn't moved twenty yards. Then around 7:30 another bird gobbles in the distance and he perks up a little and starts walking towards that gobble. The barley is volunteer from last years harvest and is real tall but it has been sprayed for a corn cover crop so there were some openings and I had my dekes in one of them. As the bird makes a big circle into the field I said to my self its now or never so I started hammering him with cuts and yelps from the diaphragm. He looked over and see's the dekes and came in on a mission to hurt the Funky. I let him give the deke a couple good kicks and then the 20 Gauge barked. I shot him at 12 Yards @ 8:00 Am. Nice Bird 22lbs 4 Oz, 12" thin beard but he had real ivory Colored 1 1/4" Spurs with black tips. When the bird stopped flopping the wad from the shell was lying under him ironically.
I will add the pictures soon I can't get my Photo Bucket account to work. I'll try again tomorrow
Enjoyed all your post this season and I can't wait for April 2018
