I am having the most difficult time with the owl hoot locator call, I have the primos power owl, and the newer primos owl call, but it always to me sounds like a weird raspy almost duck like sound! What in the world am I doing wrong? Is there a certain way to fix it or what? I don't like the sounds it makes at all, it never sounds like a real owl hoot and matter of fact have never had a turkey repond to it! Help please guys!!

Are you cupping your hands over the end of it.. and then rolling your tounge on the last note ?

I am cupping it but maybe not tight enough? And yeah I am rolling my toungue for the last note.. I do need to make a correction, my newest call isn't the primos, it is the new flex tone call (michael waddell's) from wally.... it just seems like it shouldn't sound so raspy, I will try cupping my hands tighter...

Sounds like you are doing it correctly.. maybe you just got two bad calls.. most owl calls aren't hard to become decent at..

I have always used Palmer hoot tubes .. they sound the best to me .. the wooden one sounds better than the plastic one.. I don't think I have ever tried the two you mentioned..

I don't even carry one any more though .. I use my mouth to hoot now .. one less thing I have to carry

Do you have a friend that can watch and see how you are blowing it? Of course he/she needs to know how to call. What WVBOY already described is what I would say. Something like that would be tough to solve over the puter. Hard to think 2 bad calls, but could be.

I don't use a owl call, so no specific help but I know those calls are sensitive to pressure and volume of air blown. So keep playing around with how hard/ soft you blow and how you put your mouth on the call. good luck. also google your question, somebody has been in the same boat.

Try cupping your hands completely around the end of the call...... It should then have the sound that you are looking for, but really muffled. Then just open your hands up very slightly and it should work . Practice with different hand openings until you get the desired sound. I hope that this makes sense to you.

I'll trade you a turkey for some owl calling lessons...

The other guys are spot on... those are a reed type call you definitely have to cup your hands and produce a lot of air to get the volume and sound you want.

Honestly... If we can hook up sometime before the seaon I can work with you...

Thanks a lot guys for all of the insight and information! I have been practicing with it and I think I'm getting better! But still not great! I'm careful about doing it hear at my house because I live where I hunt! So I'm pretty funny going down the road and at my work and practicing! I get some strange looks! Ohh well its turkey season I don't care!! Freddy you have no idea how much of an honor it would be to have you come up and show me up on these amazing birds! Matter of fact if I can't get my buddy's son and another young friend of mine in my youth group at church, a bird, I would love to have u up and just watch your magic! And I'm serious about that I know I still have a lot to learn, I don't have a lot of birds but if there is anybody that can get on them up here its gonna be you! And about the help with the call, I really don't want to take your time away from your family this close to the season! I would love and appreciate any help from you, but I know how much you love and care for your family and how they love you too. I know april and may are long months for you guys! So I don't want to interfere! But I am serious about tryin to get you up and take me to school on these thunder chickens!!

I haven't used those specific calls, but you will probably need to huff into the call using your diaphragm rather than blowing into it using your cheeks. As stated, cupping your hands over the end of the call to get some back pressure is usually important to get the right sound.
