Son gets one
Sunday morning while going out the door for church i looked upon the hill and saw 3 strutters. So i decided to take my son out for a while to see if he could get one. It started out poorly no gobbling at all until 8:00. Finally got some response but were directly behind us in the field. We had nothing to do but make something out of our set up. It was real thick and i did not like the setup at all but was scared to move. Finally after a few minutes i saw 5 heads coiming down from the field right toward my son. The only problem was it was pretty brushy in front of him. They came to about 15 yds from him and the big one was struttin. Then they started back up toward the field and i purred and they started back down. Finally one steped into a partial clearing and Shane took him. The only thing was it was not the big one he thought it was a jake. He was a little upset but finally got over it. After about 10-15 minutes we started around the ridge and i cutt and one answered down from me. I told Shane to stay behind and do some calling. After i sat down i hit him again and he was right below me. Shane then yelp and he answered and there he was one more step and we was on our way from pulling a double But the hens started calling and he turned a went straight back. I started cuttin and one answered behind me and he came in but stayed in the thicket. It would have been nice to pull a double with my son but i am glad he killed his. I know it was only a jake but he won't be able to hunt to many more days because he plays AAU basketball. His jake weighed 17 lbs and had a 5 in. beard.

Cool Stranger, tell him congrats. It would have been nice to score that double, but maybe next time.

Congrats Shane! That is a big jake! Is that Bball coach putting you up to AAU? I'll have to pull him aside and let him know it's spring gobbler season! Just kidding. Play as many sports as you can, while you can. Good luck to both of you the rest of the season, that sounded like an intense morning with good things to come!
