Review of a successful season
First of all I must say that I honestly believe that success is not determined by the number of kills or the size. Its a good thing as this year I only pulled the trigger once and it was a miss on opening day. Max told me to write a book on what can go wrong in the turkey woods and this year I could have filled most of the chapters. I spent the remainder of the season filming and calling for others most of the time. I had a few opportunites at a kill for myself the last week but it never materialized.Even three toes himself could not help me seal the deal. I kept telling folks that I used all of my good JU JU last year while completing my slam, so this year the kill JU JU was not on my side. I had one of the best years of my life calling in 11 birds to shotgun range and another handful close to range. In hunting twenty some days I heard a bird all but 2 and worked a bird on at least 15 hunts. I hunted with so many people this year and really enjoyed the time afield. I must say (not naming names) that so many things went awry this year with 5 misses(only one by me
) I dont think I have ever watched so many Turkeys run or fly away than this year. One of my best hunts was an evening hunt with my 6 yr old daughter. We did not hear a gobble but saw lots of game and enjoyed the time afield. I spent the last day hunting with most of the BTD crew and we had a blast even thought we only heard a few gobbles and never were really in the game. I think the closest we got was about 78 yards to a turkey(LOL inside Joke
). Most of the season I hunted with Dixie and I will let him tell you about our awesome season from his view. Thanks to all of you that hunted with me this year as I truely enjoyed every hunt even the misses
This was the first year in many that I hunted all in VA in 6 different counties with no out of state trips.
I may actually have one last chance if I head to WV next weekend to hunt with a friend.
I hope to see everyone at the cookout. Congrats to all that scored this year. I enjoyed reading all of your posts and looking at some pics of great kills. I hope we have a good hatch so that two years will bring another great crop of 2 year olds gobbling their heads off.
