Had a great hunt this morning! Got into the same area I hunted last Thursday. Worked up a game plan and it played out. Had the bird gobbling around 0600 pretty good. Then heard a shot and thought someone else tagged the bird. After a few minutes though I heard it gobble again.
Just then a hen started cutting about 70 yards in front of us. This coupled with our yelps brought the bird into about 75 yards. Then he decided he liked this area and just kept strutting for about 35 minutes. Finally the hen wondered off and he decided he would come check out our hen. He was coming straight at me and at 30 yards he stretched up his head to look around and I popped him. I was afraid to let him come closer because I was sitting in the open. I think what closed the deal was the soft purring and leaf rustling. My friend was talking turkey too but the Tom came right to me. Guess it is true, less can be more!
Thanks for the tip Freddy. Anyway, the bird weighed 18 lbs 12 oz field dressed. He had a 10" beard and 1 1/8 inch spurs. It was great watching him for all that time. It will be a great memory for many years to come.
I want to thank all of you for helping me grow in the sport. Without your help I probably wouldn't have gotten this bird.
