First hunt...exciting, but aggravating!!!
This morning, Monday of opening week, I was making my way to the second spot I'd scouted, where I had seen birds before in the fall hunting deer, when I saw a big bird strutting on the egde of a field lining a swamp/marsh bed. I think it might of saw me walking down the road, but I decided to go after it. Once I cleared his view of me, I made my way down the same side of the field, as it curved towards his view, I made my way thru the woods. He was 100 yds away when I yelped on the mouth call, he gobbled back! I got to wear I could see him thru the thicket steady struting and gobbling each time i called, but he wouldn't move closer. He gobbled almost 20 times!!! I got about 50 yds and settled on the brush line. He still wouldn't come closer :x I had to go to work so I keep my way towards him(I think it would of been a different outcome if I'd been more patient). I moved slightly deeper in the woods and got parallel with the bird and the swamp. I moved towards him, maybe a lil to close and fast due to my anxiety, it was my first true turkey hunt! I got within 20 yds of the bird and he was fired up, but I couldn't get a clear view thru the thick brush line, he looked to have a 10in beard and a beautiful spread! I rustled thru the brush he spooked and high tailed it past me to the swamp. I had to go by that time but he would still return my call after he crossed the marsh. Anyone have any advice on the approach, and do I have a chance of getting that bird again near the same spot? I'm going tomorrow to see!!!
