Post Hunting near Abingdon VA
I'm in Abingdon on Business April 10th. My appointment is not until 12:00 that day I was hoping to slip out for an early morning hunt on some Public Land. If anyone is from that area or knows it I would appreciate any input. I see on http://www.findgame.org that Clinch Mountain WMA and Mount Rogers Recreation area are somewhat close to there. I am staying right in Abingdon, so if someone could tell me which of these two may be my best option and some directions on how to get to there from the town of Abingdon and how long the drive may take me I would appreciate it. I'm not looking for any honey hole secrets, Just get me to the main road and I'll take if from there. You can reply here if you wish or send me a PM.

Thanks,

It will take you approximately 45 mins. to an hour drive time to either location you choose. I have hunted the Clinch Mtn. WMA many times, but never for spring gobblers. Used to fish it a lot in the spring for trout before I began spring turkey chasing.

If you want to find one there you will probably be very lucky to just go in the blind and kill a bird. It is a very large and rugged area. But, if you just want to get away for a day then that's the place to go. I used to find quite a few birds in the fall near Laurel Bed Lake. The easiest way to go would be to head south on 19 and take Brumley Gap road Rt. 698 on the right and go straight to the turn off to the WMA. Good Luck!

hey wv boy, i have to work monday morning or i would be glad to take ya. i can however offer some assistance. i could easily meet you at exit 60 (40 min from abingdon) and escort you to some prime turkey land, show you where to park, point you to the bird and leave the rest up to you
