I would think that far up they are Coy Dogs, if not they are large coyotes. Good hall, good start.

You might be able to get a coyote and dog to have a successful litter in a southern climate. But in the northeast....

These are purebred coyote.

When I ran my coyote line years ago in NH the F&G asked me for a tissue sample to check the DNA. I sent them a tongue. The coyote's DNA came back with Great Lakes wolf genes. Seems on the coyotes eastern expansion to New England they took the Michigan Upper Peninsula route and cross bred with gray wolves.

That is why we see such big coyotes with pack mentality.

The problem with a sustainable population of coydogs is a dogs heat cycle, which could happen at any time of the year. Hard to feed a new litter of pups in January with snow on the ground. Where as the coyote breeding season is taking place here now. The pups will be born in April and by the time they are weaned their prey species will also be at their maximum. Not to mention fruits, berries and greens.

The coydog phenomenon is interesting to speculate about. No doubt it happens fairly regularly. I have caught one creature that I feel certain was a coy dog.....built like a coyote, acted like a coyote, off color, something about the ideas did not look coyote. That was a long time ago. Wish I had pics. Guys post catch pics all the time of straight up mut looking coydogs. No doubt most of them probably die off without lasting contribution to the gene pool. In my opinion though, that is what cause the off color and black coyotes that are so prominent throughout the south.

My friends up in NY call the wolf yote mix coydogs. It is confusing to me too, but it is NY after all. They have 60 to 70 pounders up there and several friends have been treed. Still fall in the shoot on site category.
