Post new pup
I got a new pup last weekend, a choc lab female that's 10 weeks old now. Any advice on how to make her a decent duck dog? I bought the book water dog and just started it today so I've got something to go off of. Anybody else ever use that? He uses whistles, do most people use whistles or verbal command? Any tips would be good, this is a new world for me. Thanks.

Congrats on the new hunter. Fun times ahead as well as damaged property  I can recommend a couple of things. First get on refuge forums on the Gun Dog thread and ask any questions you have. But consider yourself warned, some of these guys are testy and can get a little bold behind the comforts and safety of their computer screen. Second, you might consider some alternate methods than what was taught in Water Dog. That is an older edition and some new material may present some better methods of training. Robert Milner's book is excellent if you are just looking for a well mannered hunting buddy. I also have Retriever Training by Tom Dokken and that is very good and informative, with lots of descriptive pictures. Lastly, the breeder where I will get my next hunting buddy from recommends the "The 10 Minute Retriever" by the John and Amy Dahl, but I have not read that one yet. Good luck to you. Go slow and have fun.

I highly recommend Upland Journal. Lot of lab guys there. It may take a while since they don't open membership often. Very well moderated. It is all about the dog.
