Wondering if any of you guys dove hunt! Def. a VA. tradition !.. The smell of freshly cut corn, the cooler fall temps! Maybe the socialgathering before or after the hunt! Definately good timeslay ahead and good memories of seasons past! :D

I do love me some dove hunting! Unfortunately, our dove fields have been dwindling and this past year closed the gate on our last spot. I would love to throw some lead in their general direction, just need to find a place to do so.

When I was a kid opening day was a tradition. My father and some of his coworkers would find somewhere (typically public) and get there at daybreak to beat the other guys who would show up at noon. Then, they would set out the "Swine Line". This was two 20' conduit poles tied standing with a clothes line between. On the line we would tie dove decoys, but they would be sitting underneath the line. Doves would fly in after getting shot at down the field and go to land on the wire, but back pedal when they realized something wasn't right with the decoys sitting below it. Blammo! I started out with a single shot .410 and later graduated to an over-under 20. Now I shoot with a 12 and am a third shot wonder. My best day dovin' saw 15 doves on the ground with 18 shots. That, my friends, was a one time deal. I will spend 3 boxes or more before I kill 15 on average.

I do miss those days. Now its tough to find a field that is cut anywhere near opening day. Late season has treated us much better but, as I said before, the gates have been closed on that property.

Y'all ever hunt pigeons? That can be some fun, too!

It is a load of fun for sure. I didn't have the opportunity growing up but enjoyed a couple good hunts the last few years. Hoping my buddy at church invites me to his sunflower patch for the season opener.
