Post subject:  Going hunting?

My dad, brother and I are going on a guided duck and goose hunt in Jan. on Chincotigue Island. The guide says we will be calling mostly ourselves. The worst is this is a new experience and I have never tried to call a duck or goose. Any tips on what kind of calls to go with for calling ducks and geese(snow geese). Thanks for any advice.

Here is the website. We have never done this before. Just thought we would give it a shot. We are used to hunting deer and turkeys in the Shenandoah Valley. Thanks for any advice.

The first thought that comes to mind would be that I have never been on a guided hunt where the guide didn't call. Is the guide just for access to the hunting area? Or is he actually guiding (Setting Dekes.....Putting Blind together...?) In my honest opinion this just doestn't sound right.

Calling isn't everything in waterfowl hunting, (being where the ducks want to be at the given time is) but it is certainly an important part of the picture and good calling can make or break a hunt. Hopefully Henned Up can shed some light on this for you. Lot's of good calls on the market and you don't have to spend major dollars for one. Haydels are less expensive and easy to blow as are Duck Commanders. The higher dollar calls are sometimes more difficult for a beginner to blow.

I'm not trying to rain on your hunt but I have been on the "taken" end of a "guided hunt" and would hate to see you loose hard erned money on a bad experience.

Good Luck!

I looked at the website and it is hard to tell What the real deal is. Does the guide actually stay with you all day? Or are you left to your own devices?

I sent him a pm about the guide. I didn't want to rip the guy out in the open here. As far as the calling, most of the ducks out that way are divers and sea ducks so calling isn't necessary. The guide in question usually books a good number of people per day and drops you off in a blind with a radio and leaves you out all day. Great if you want to make a bunch of money but not such a good idea if you want any return business.
