Rifle Calibers
Was wondering what calibers everyone is using for the upcoming deer season?

Mine is 7mm rem mag. Didn't know if you included magnum under 7mm since the 7mm 08 was seperate.

Same Marlin 30/30 I've had for the last 22 seasons. Some day I'm going to get me a real gun when then one quits killing deer!

dale.. that gun is as real as it gets!!. and if it keeps killin.. why go with a gun thats heavier to carry... kicks a whole heck of alot especially when tryin to sight in.. lol.. i used to carry my grandfather's 30-30 years ago... and then he wanted it back for some reason.. but i'd still carry it today! those guns get the job done just as good as any other rifle i've ever carried!! funny thing is.. i got made fun of alot carrying it!!.. especially by some of my dad's SWAT buddies!!.. "thats allright " i told them.. especially one particular day when i had a nice deer on the ground and one of them had missed with their.. $1,000 custom made rifle! lol..

Yea, It's put alot of meat in the freezer. Since I don't hunt fields very much and most of my shots have been in the 30 - 75 yard range, I've not had the need to get another gun. However, I've not been pleased with the knockdown power of the 30/30. Sure, I kill the deer but usually end up trailing it 30-100 yards. I've seen deer hit with all kinds of calibers and some deer will run no what what you hit them with. I'd just like to have something with more power in case the good Lord ever sees fit to allow me the opportunity to hunt Elk!

yeah i have to agree with you on that one for sure!!. when i hunted with it.. i can only remember 1 maybe 2 deer that i was able to drop with a shot... several fell down but got back up and maybe run 30 yards or so.. but i do remember having to trail a bit.. ofcourse.. i dont know what the deal is.. but i shoot a 300 wthby and i have yet to drop a single deer with it... they dont get far let me say.. but even on a drop dead vital shot.. they still run.. soo who knows really! lol.. the only reason i got this gun.. is bc i hunt alot of mountains that have those 200 300 yard across ridges.. that and what you said.. if the Lord happens to bless me with an out of state trip somewhere.. i'll be allright !

I've experienced the same guys! I've absolutely nailed deer dead in the lung/heart area with a 7mm mag, only to end up trailin 'em, usually not far mind you, but still it's amazing the adrenaline a deer has when they've been hit like that

it is pretty amazing how deer can with stand a hit from a 300 or a 7mm.. and especially with exit wounds like i have seen from this gun ( both of them).. and still take off on a "dead" run.. ( no pun intended)...
one thing about it... God made some pretty amazing animals!!..

25-06 Rem. 700 BDL. Have had real good success. I would like to try the 270 short magnum though.

I'm sure Scott shared his experience regarding the doe he killed last year with his Encore .308. Reading these posts just reminded me of it. The exit wound on that deer was nothing short of gross. The deer didn't need to be gutted, it was that bad!
