Post Butcher Shop
Well we are a week away from the archery opener and I am feeling optimistic. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good place to get a deer cut. Looking for something in the Vinton/Bedford/...even Botetourt area. Dad and I usually cut our own but its going to be warm and I don't want to be messing around when I can get a critter in a cooler and taken care of properly. Any info on processors would be greatly appreciated. Good luck to everyone this season, be safe, take a kid hunting and most of all have fun!!

There is a gentleman in Catawba that does a great job, I'll have to look around my house to see if I have his number still, he is worth the drive over the mountain. His name is Norman Wood. I'll look and get back to you.

We have a cooler and my brother and nephew do the processing.

There's another one off 460 going to Altavista a few miles down the road, nice setup, forget the name (I think it's Peaks or something).

But if I am keeping the meat I do it myself even with the heat. Skin and quarter it as soon as you retrieve it. If you don't have enough room in the fridge, open the plug on a couple of coolers and ice it down. Saves the hassle of running all over the place to drop it off and pick it up.

My cousin keeps his in a cooler on ice and water with salt. I bet he doesn't process it for 5 - 6 days. I just put my quarters in the fridge ASAP. That gives me about 5 to 6 days to get it in the freezer.
