Re: Skinning/Dressing a deer I have skined a lot of deer, never in that kind of time. I was surprised how easy the hide came off. He was using a very sharp knife and an incredibly sharp saw. I usually don't use a saw but cut them at the joints.
If you can't get your knife that sharp try one of the stones mounted to a shaft. It sets the angle and will put a razor's edge on it. Even the electric sharperers do a pretty good job, only problem is they eat a lot of steel in the process. Re: Skinning/Dressing a deer If you want a knife that sharp then check out this... http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/default.aspx?productNumber=855877 Uses a replaceable scalpel blade. I just got one this summer and really like. Mine came with 12 replacement blades.

Re: Skinning/Dressing a deer True Barry. I usually skin all mine within a few hours but have never had hide peel off that easy. One swing and he was almost to the backbone. The bone saw going through the leg with one pass was something too.

Re: Skinning/Dressing a deer you want a sharp knife get one made from D2 hardened steel. you can skin alot of deer before it will ever need sharping.

I Just got through building a skinning Machine for coons and yotes. Got an electric hoist on it and it telescopes up to 11 feet. If I shoot a deer in the next few weeks I'll see how it works with that. Probably won't be keeping up with them though. |

Re: Skinning/Dressing a deer Tscott that's the knife I've been using for the past 3 or 4 years. I love it! It's scary Sharp and can skin and gut 3 or 4 deer as long as u dont try to saw bone. We quarter most of our deer back in the mtn and its nice to pop a new blade in and not miss a beat. Works good on skinning and breasting out turkeys to.
