George Washington National Forest
Hey Guys,
Im looking for a little info on turkey hunting the national forest around Augusta county, or somewhere in NW Virginia. Do these public lands hold many birds? Can I get away from the crowds?
I can hunt from the opener until about the 20th this year. Would I be better off trying earlier or later in that time frame. I plan on tent camping and scouting the afternoons. Just looking for a place to start. Not looking for your honey holes. Thanks

Re: George Washington National Forest
I think in the National Forest later is always a bit better because of pressure and henned up birds. I think early in the season just about all the National Forest gets hammered. That said, I hunted the last day of the season last year and worked a bird up until noon. Unfortunately, he was on posted land just off the National Forest and had no desire to come in my direction.

Where I hunt in Augusta, I always hear birds but they are tricky! If you hike in some to get away from the quick and easy spots, you'll have better success.
