I was in bass pro looking around, and picked up a wingbone yelper. I've never used one, but can make some sounds close to a yelp. It's not a real wingbone, its a green plastic one made by primos. Has anyone ever used one of these before? It's really loud I guess it would be good to help locate a far off bird, I'm not sure just something else to try if nothing else is working I guess. |

I too have one like you bought but I depend on my homemade "bones" to help fill my tags . They are great when used for long distance calling but you can tone it down when needed. I've actually finished birds by whines, clucks and soft yelping. Hang with the winbone calls, being something a little different, sometimes they come arunnin

That plastic Primos wing bone was designed from a wingbone made by David Collins. Here is one he made for one our banquets.

Good info I did not know his wing bone was the one Primos made. I also got one he made me that is a killer wingbone for gobblers in the fall. Those plastic wing bones do have a ring to them but with some practice you should be able to tone it down. Earl |

Beardbuster, a Google search on "wing bone call making" will get you lots of info, including this from the NWTF http://www.nwtf.org/tips_adventures/tips.php?id=287 Supposedly hen or jake wings are better for calls than mature gobbler wings. You can make a 3-bone call as shown in Barry's pic above using humerus, radius, and ulna or a 2-bone call using just the two smallest bones, the radius and ulna. After a friend gave me a 3-bone call he had made I made a couple myself. It is not particularly difficult to do. I find it hard to make a good yelp consistently, but I have gotten a gobble in response to it when everything was being ignored. Frankly, I think it may have been a shock gobble. Mine makes a high-pitched, penetrating yelp but I seldom use it unless everything else is not working, although I always have it in my vest. Making a wing bone call is definitely an enjoyable little project to help kill those interminable 47 weeks between spring seasons. |
