Post subject:  Hello, and help please

Hello everyone, my name's Dan, and I've been lurking for a couple weeks now.
First off, thanks for the information already on this site, it's been a big help. I'm new to this area as well as to turkey hunting. My roommate and I have both been deer hunting and decided to try for turkey this season. I've been working on my calls as I know that's going to be the biggest factor in getting a bird to come in. My question is on the actual strategy of the hunt. We are hunting on Ft. Belvoir and have heard plenty. We've been out 3 days so far, this first day we heard gobblers the whole day, but yesterday and today it seems the gobblers went quiet at 0730 with not another one heard all day; any explanation on this? Being on post we are bow hunting, and the current strategy we have been using is to set up early on a field, then about 30-40 minutes after sunrise we get up and walk the woods trying to move near the gobblers and call them in. Does this sound like a plausible strategy? Should we sit longer? I'm hearing plenty of noise in the mornings but it seems that they always get hung up just outside of the field. Any help is greatly appreciated and like I said earlier, thanks for all the info on here already.

It sounds like your hunting pretty good area with hearing turkeys when you said they gobble good till 730 it sounds like they have hens with them, which usually means once the hens catch up with them they'll shut-up an strutt around them. As the season drags on the hens slowly start nesting an leave the gobblers which means they'll start getting lonely again, what you can try to do is when you hear the direction they go off the roost on the ground you'll be able to hear the difference from roost gobbling from ground gobbling try an get in that line of travel way before it gets light slip in there an set up. I like finding there strutt zones area's they go off roost they like strutting around in to look all pretty for the ladies an set up a decoy an wait'em out you usually can find these area by looking in the leaves for drag marks where they drag there wings. If you find a good spot an set up an you try calling to them an they answer you try hanging out there because often they'll come back looking for you sometimes they'll drag there hens along to try an find you. I hunt fielded area's to an i set up there generally they will venture out there to bug in but sometimes it isn't till later mid-morning's so if you try waiting it out they will come out there, set up a few decoys do some soft blind calling they will come check you out eventually.

Dan, good post. The cold snap shut off the gobbling in eastern VA as well, so you are not alone. Your strategy is sound. Set up close to them on the roost (preferably in an area they like to go to after fly down), try and call them in after they fly down. If you can't get them then, move to another area and start calling every few hundred yards. If you get one that is hot, move in and set up, if not keep trying other areas. About 8 they get lonely so the gobbler you missed off the roost may respond to your calls then. Where I hunt, it is rare that a Tom doesn't fly down with hens waiting for him, so if you don't get him off the roost don't sweat it. I am by no means an expert, but that is how I do it. Hope it helps, if you come across a different strategy that works for you, please share the wealth. Good luck.

Thanks for the read and comments...
This turkey business is a completely different idea than sitting in a tree stand waiting on a deer, different but addicting. I should be headed out this Saturday, hopefully I can get one with some pictures. Even if I get skunked this season, I have a feeling I'll be chasing turkey until I am no longer able, consider me hooked.

Thanks again,
Dan
