Post subject:  Cutting the Reeds in a Diaphram Call

OK fellows.. Santa brought me a Call PurrFect call maker kit for X-mas.. I've made a couple practice calls.. they sound OK..

What I'm wondering is what you guys who make calls for a living, or make them for your own use like I'm doing use to make the cuts in the reeds.. I just used a small pair of Siccors but the cuts were not precise enough for my liking. It made them real Jagged and I'm sure effected the tone overall.

I know some of you guys either have this Kit or something similar to make your own calls and just wondered if you would share what you use to cut the reeds with.. I'm thinking there may be some tool out there that will do it.. I was thinking of making something myself that involved razor blades but wanted to ask first.. I would like to be able to make the Half Moon Cut and the Split V cut at least with some sort of consistency without eyeballing it everytime..

Thanks,

you will need
smallest fiskar scissors you can find
small pair of surgical scissors and tweezers that OPEN when you press them and stay closed in their relaxed position

Post subject:  Use a sharp pair

Also the tension you have on the reeds will also impact the cut you make. so watch out.

Remember that back tension is just as important as the left to right tension.
