Post NC tags are filled!!!!
Late yesterday afternoon went on a scouting trip and found a gobbler strutting with a lone hen, managed to take a few pictures with the 35MM camera. After watching them for well over an hour, four hens came in and joined them. The gobbler stayed in strut from 6:00 to 8:00pm before flying up to roost. He never gobbled the entire time I watched him, even though geese flew over honking, crows cawed, and a pair of owls sung their chorus within 100 yards of him. This morning my wife and I were set up in the same area anxiously awaiting daybreak. What a beautiful still morning, Owls, whippoorwills, red birds, geese, crows followed by a BOOMING GOOOBBBBLLE!!! He gobbled at least twenty times on the roost, and came unglued when I called softly, followed by a flydown sequence. He showed up about fifteen minutes later with six hens and a jake. He never gobbled once he was on the ground this morning, including the 15 minutes it took him to get to us and the ~15 minutes we watched him strut before he got in position for a clean shot. He basically stayed in strut the entire time he was in sight, until Terri sent a load of #6's his way. We have been blessed to have a wonderful spring, and really enjoyed this hunt as we heard lots of gobbling on the roost, heard a lot of hen talk, had one hen dust herself ten yards in front of us, and had turkeys around us shortly after fly down until Terri's turkey was in possession. Turkey is an 18LB two year old, 9.5 inch beard...why he has all the hens is anyone's guess, but he definitely thought he was the boss of the woods! Terri did a great job of keeping her composure with turkeys all around us, and made a great shot. What a way to end our NC season!!!
