Post 2nd public land bird
I was happy today I chose to put studying aside for my test today and instead go hunting. It was rainy a bit windy and really foggy this morning as I head up the ridge close to where I killed my gobbler on saturday. It was gettin on into the morning about 7:00 when one answered my owl call. He was a ways and it was gettin pretty light out but the visibilty due to the fog allowed me to get right in above him. 2 other gobblers sounded off with him after I got set up. I made my first call to him and he gobbled but then right after I did I could hear a hen call right back. I knew I was in for a dual and she was already on the ground walkin below him. I couldnt see the main gobbler but was pretty sure I could hear him drummin on the limb. After about 20 minutes I heard nothing more from the hen and much to my suprise the gobbler gobbled about 50 yards from me and was already on the ground. He kept his distance and did a big circle around me when I finally got a dry slate out and made one last call that brought him to me. Like my first one he came from down the hill below me where I couldnt see him but could hear him struttin then finally he appeared from down the hill and was again at exactly 7 yards. With that I lowered the boom on him. I cant tell ya how lucky and happy I am.
He was a nice bird bigger than my first prolly a 3 year old.
