Post VA opener success
My wife was going out of town this morning and I had to be out of hte woods at 8am (really 9 but its an hour drive home )!

Have not got to do a whole lot of scouting so i went to my favorite spot! And was easing through some pines that lead to some real pretty open hard woods that usualy have birds roosted in them. Reached the hard woods and looked and there must have been 15- hens in the trees less than 70 yards!

So i eased back into the pines and set down and inched my way to the edge. Then were i thought they should be 3 gobblers started sounding off.I was watching the hens infront of me and look to my right and less than 50 yards there was a big longbeard strutting on a limb right in front of me!1 Those gobblers were going crazy but the big boy was spitting and drumming form the tree! He gobbled one time! I could tell that the other three were on the ground and i wanted to be the first hen they heard on the ground so i yelped and did a qiute fly down cackle with some soft yelps. this was greeted with a double gobble form less than 100 yards in front of me!

Meanwhile a few hens start flying down and started yelping so i get a little more agressive and the strutter in the tree looks to be getting ready when all of a sudden he gentle flys down right in front of me just out of sight and gobbles when he hits the ground which set the wood alive with gobbling. There are still several hens in the tree 7-9 and aftere about 10 minutes i yelp a few times and the birds gobbled all around me!

I can hear PFTvooom,PFTvooom just to my left and out of the corner of my eye there he is spitting and drumming for all he was worth>His head was a beautiful red, white and blue he step behind a tree i moved and when he stepped out i layed him out with a load of #5's at 25 yards. All this happened and i was standing over my bird at 7:10am!

Not sure if he was the one i saw on the limb because this bird showed up were i thought those other three should be coming from. And was a bird gobbling just to my right. BUt his chest was bare and he was stutting hard. If i hadn heard all that spitting and drumming in SC last week i wouldnt have new what htat noise was! And gotten busted1 and Also would like to say congrats to my good friend Jeff he bagged a nice longbeard this morning also! Will let him tell his story and stats later.

21.11 lb's/ 1 1/8th spurs/10 1/2inch beard

Hey thanks guys! It was just one of thse days when everything fell together. Tburt i wouldnt have really know what that was but last week while in SC tried to video bow kill with a good friend and the gobbler spit and drummed for about 15 mints at less than 15 yards and as close as 5 lacked about 1 more step for a clear shot. Got it all on video and you can hear it jsut a clear as day on tape! Didnt bow kill but we went in there the next morning and doubled on 2 fine SC longbeards!!
