Post It Was A Great Turkey Season - posted for GS1946
I finished my season this morning, not in the traditional fashion, but still a finish. I knew the toms weren't gobbling at all right now for some reason. I also knew where this gobbler liked to hangout and roost. So I got there early and eased in tight as possible to where I thought he might be roosted. I faced in the direction I thought the tom might come when he flew down. I did have just a little edge... I had watched and or heard him on a few occasions fly down and gobble his way through the area where I now had set up. As daylight crept in, the woods were still with no gobbles or small hen talk here or anywhere else as a matter of fact. I was begining to think he had moved to another roosting area, when I saw a single black turkey fly down fifty yards or so in front of me. I got my gun up pointing towards the flat in the general direction I thought he would come. I waited. Then I caught something out the corner of my eye to my right, there he stood looking straight at me...I froze. He stood there for a little while then stepped behind a small tree, thats when I swung my gun and was on him, no calling, gobbling or yelping. On April 24 6:40am and at 22 yds I dropped him stone dead, 20# 9 1/2" beard and 1" spurs. I think this was the gobbler that my grandson Alex missed in March on the juvy hunt. Some of his tail feathers looked as if they had been shot but who knows? What'a turkey season. Travis ( my son) and I took a double. I was with my 10 year old grandson when he missed his first two gobblers. And with him when he finally killed his first one. It was the best turkey season I've ever had and probably ever will have!
