Took a fellow that said he had been spring huntin for 10 years but had not taken a turkey yet. So after he had gotten close to a shot with a friend of mine that morning ,I met them at 8;00. We hit the woods and worked up to a little ridge. I called softly before topping out but no response . We listened for about 10 min. I had planned on going on over a couple ridges before doing any thing but i thought, better blow the crow call just in case. couple short blasts nothing, then some rawcous notes followed by 4 quick blasts and there they were! 150 yds on the side of the next ridge ahead. We set up in a little opening. and I called and could tell it was more than one. A little later i cut at em and they liked it better and started moving our way. After a little silence i heard a crash over our right shoulder thought it might be them but no. after a little while my next calls fell empty. we sat a good while there trying to figure what was going on then i yelped louder and cut a little Gobbleoble out in front about 100 yds , I gave em the cuts again 65 yds came the response. I could hear them walkin straight in perfectly, then I saw them 1, 2 ....5! 5 longbeards, 1 struttin. I figured this boy was about to pass out and later he said he was. They got to the edge of the clearing and I was hoping he would let them walk on in so I could double up as i was behind him on his left about 15 yds but when they hit 40 yds from him he flattened the first one. after 10 years I told him I'd have done the same thing! It was his first gobbler and the first time I'd called in 5 all being longbeards. That gobbler may still be making the rounds. 17 1/2 lbs /10 in / 3/4 spur A great hunt.

Great Story... It most likely took alot of self control to let them even get to 40 yds.

Good Job by Both,

Tom

Very nice!!! Good job with the locator too. What's Tom Kelly say about calling up a turkey for someone else.... something about a dead elephant sale in August? Congrats!!

Bird Dog that was a wonderful sounding hunt for you both. But, you have me wondering what the loud "crash" was that you heard a little bit before the 5 Longbeards came in ??? Have many more enjoyable hunts and keep us up to date.

Fredrick , for all I know it was just a limb falling out of a tree, I never heard anything run off and it has happened to me before. heck it might have done us a favor. the toms shut up for little while and they had moved into perfect position when they opened back up. Good to see you lurking around here, might as well join in.

Freddy, I was thinking next week! He didn't take the strutter!
