I've only been huntin turkeys for 3 years now, but w/ good success in BedCo. Never hunted them in the evenings, though. Can anybody give me some tips? If you don't have a field to set up on, will they respond to calling in the p.m. hours? My guess is you have to be set up near a roosting location, or it could be tough. Most of my property is cutover and hardwood. Can you experts help? thanks! Buckhunter |

You can get them to gobble in the evenings, it's just a little tougher. Finding where the feed and where the roost is essential, and just setting up before they get there. Just watch out for the hens b/c they will come before the gobbler does in the evenings, at least with my experience they do. |

Killed my first bird at 6:00 PM with Freddy just down the road from his house. He took 55 minutes to come in, and he never made a sound. He was 21 1/2 lbs! It works! |

You're best bet will be hunting the roosting area. I've had luck setting up on these and being quiet. It seems during the hottest days birds will not get vocal till 7:30 or so. If you're not hearing any try to find hollows or "bowls" that the sun does not shine in after 4 or 5 o'clock. When it's hot it seems the turkeys like shade as much as humans. I've had luck in spots like this. Good luck!!! |

I'm not an expert and I only hunt in SW Virginia and East TN. Lately, I'm not hearing the birds talk very much after they fly down in the morning. And, I've never had much luck with aggressive calling after the hens go to nest in the afternoon. I just try a cluck or soft purr every once in a while to let that roaming gobbler know where I am. Just because he does not answer your call does not mean that your call is not effective. |

Thanks for the tips guys - I will put them to use tonight! The roosting area I have in mind is along a shady creek bottom (although the hill to the creek is VERY steep) . I actually work with a guy who has given me similar advice as ya'll. He aint a good lookin chap, but he apparently knows gobblers.
