Post subject:  Bears

Anyone seeing any bears while turkey hunting or scouting?I planned to be in the woods by 5:00; but, saw a bear in the field I cross to get to the woods. He was eating last falls wallnuts like they were candy.Just listening to the shells crunching in his jaws made my teeth hurt.I thought he was a average size bear at first I then realized when it got a little lighter that he was lying on his belly. He eventually got up and I then saw him to be a mature boar that probally would weigh 450-475lbs.I just hope he is still in the area come bear season.

I saw 2 Friday morning up in Page County...............2 bears, 1 deer, a raccoon, a fox, squirrels, and other birds, but no turkeys. I found it to be pretty amazing how quietly he walked through the woods. The first one I heard but could barely see b/c it was still dark, but the second one was probably around 6:15-6:30, so it was light out. I never even heard him, I caught something out of my peripheral vision to my right and 30 yards away from me was a bear walking up the ridge.

I have not seen any yet which is kind of surprising given my track record over the last few years. Last Sat, my buddy and I were hunting in Botetourt. As we split up before light I sent him to a spot that I'd had a run in with a couple of bears during bow season. Jokingly, I said watch out for bears..... Well in the middle of the downpour, my buddy is sitting against a tree with an inflatable Sceery hen out about 15 yards. About 7:15, he looks out across the clear cut and sees a large boar ambling his way. He's not sure what to do, but just sits still (he does cock his single-shot 20 gauge) . The bear stretches on a tree, then comes on over to check out the decoy. He sniffs the tail then mouths the back. His tooth pops the thing and startles him. The decoy is stuck to his tooth! He shakes it loose, sniffs it, then hurries on off. My buddy said it was one of the most incredible experiences he's ever had in the woods. This was his first bear sighting and he's been hunting 25 years.

Another buddy of mine saw a young bear last week in Pulaski County.

I setup a turkey decoy in my food plot 3 weeks ago, and put my trail camera on it. Hoping to get a picture of a strutting gobbler. I left it there for 2 weeks and came back to check the pictures. I had 5 pictures of a bear tearing apart my decoy. After he was done with the decoy, I think the flash from the trail camera irritated him, so he walked over to the camera and smacked it off the tree. I downloaded the pictures, stiched up my turkey decoy and put it back up. The bear came back 4 days laster and tore it all up again. This picutre was on april the 3rd at 7:10. The pictrue shows 6:10 but I had not adjusted the camera for daylight savings time. Freddy, I will e-mail you the pics so you can post them for me.

I hunted the Hidden Vally WMA this am. For almost a quarter mile stretch along a high ridge it seemed liked every dogwood that was 4" in diameter and smaller had been pulled over. I didn't seen any tracks or scat but it had rained pretty darned hard. I know I'll see one soon....

Yup I ran into a bear last week in Buckanan CO, I was running up the road on our property tring to close the big gap between me and a hot bird and the bear came running up from under the hill about 15 yards in front of me close enough I could her him breathing. Im not sure who scared who the most. I made a gasping sound and the bear made a grunt type noise almost like my gasp, then he dug into high gear and on over the bank he went tearing up stumps down the steep hill. Since I could hear his pant I think that either someone else had bumped him or dogs were after him but I didnt hear any barking? Who know's its the first bear I've ever seen in the wild. I've seen tracks but never an actual bear.
