OLD beat up mountain bird
Went out on Nat. Forest this morning, Heard 0 gobbles at day break. So I call a little and nothing. Walk out ridge about 600 yards call and I was cut off by a goblle. I get set up and called for about 30 min and all I got was a coutesy goble every now and then. Then all goes quiet. I moved out the ridge another 100 yards and get set up. Called with mouth call nothing, call with glass nothing, pulled the old Lynch box out and he double gobbles. I wait and he gobles again sounds like he cutting the distance. I call he goblles. After about 20 minutes he goes quite. Then I hear a hen yelp, so I start calling to her, She gets fired up and the gobler takes off again, There together. So I start mocking every call the hen makes, she is getting closer, finally I spot them, 2 hens and 1 big strutting long beard. There coming out the ridge heading for me. Then all of a sudden the hens cut up the hill, with ole big boy on there tail strutting. I had 1 shot about 40 yards, it was a little thick, I decided not to take the shot in hopes that a better one would come available ( NOT ) they went over ridge top out of sight. I called hoping to bring them back, Then I hear a deep cluck below me I looked and hear comes 2 jakes and a long beard. They walked by me about 15 yards away, then the long beard follows pattern. I cracked down on him and he flopped about 100 yards straight down the mountain. Odd bird, 3 short tail feathers on one side of fan, the rest was a full fan. One spur nub, the other 3/4 inch, beard 8 1/2 inches, weight 16 3/4 pounds

Congrats! As soon as Max reads this I'll get a call that he wants to go up on the mountain and chase another one flopping down the side! WAY TO GO!

Good Job! I guess like any other animal you'll see an oddball every now and then.
