Post subject:  Bird out in the dark?

First day of Maryland season. Got a known good location at Aberdeen Proving Ground. We got on location by 0545 and set up. Heard one gobble at 0610 and nothing the rest of the morning. No hens or gobblers. We came out around 1030 and the Game Warden was waiting for us. He checked our guns to make sure the plugs were in there. We got to chatting with him and he was quite surprised we didn't see bird one. He said he drove around there between 0400 and 0430 and saw a flock of 20 to 30 birds on the ground milling around. I was surprised to hear the birds were on the ground 2 hours before sun up. I wouldn think that something must of scared the birds off the roost to be on the ground at that time.

Question: Do turkeys get down and graze in the dark if there is good moon light?

I think we didn't see or hear birds because something spooked them. What do you all think.

Also, I hope Freddy has his school next year. If nothing else I would like someone to help me with my calling.

Good luck to you all.

I would think that he meant he saw them the evening before.

I agree with Barry.. I've never heard of an entire Flock out in the Dark even in a full moon. I have heard of single Hens nesting being seen on the ground in the dark..

That Game Warden should learn to tell time....its a big difference between 0400 hours and 1600 hours... :)

He was talking about evening or pulling your leg! . Of course it didn't help you much him driving around your area the evening before.

I had one gobbling at the lightning and thunder at 10 pm fri night , neat to hear. First one I'd heard from the house this year.

Turkeys spooked in the dark usually fly to another tree. I've never encountered a turkey on the ground in the dark. Like the others, I think the GM was speaking of the prior evening.

The bird Amy killed Monday was on the ground well before good light... a clear exception. (She should post the story soon!)

But I agree with the rest... the evening before or telling you a fib!

We're going to work on that school for next year!

I talked to another guy and he basically said the guy is nuts. I have had several others say the same. It didn't make sense to me so that is why I asked.
