Took a 14 year old out this morning for his first hunt. We had gone to the property Friday night and heard no roost gobbles but I had seen turkeys in the adjacent field before so that is where we were in the dark. Got set up and at 6:15 the first of 4 birds sounded within 200-300 yards (3 gobblers and a jake). The closest one gobbled when he got on the ground and started coming. Popped out in the field 60 yards from us and put on a show for my young hunting partner! (Note: we could not shoot into the field, don't have permission). The bird ducks into the woods and I've got him fired but he would not cross a 6' ditch!!. Well all his gobbling must have brought a hen to him and he went off with her. Well at 8:30 he comes back fired up. Needless to say we worked him 3 more times gobbling up to 10:45 but I could never get him to cross onto the property. We did get him in range but on the wrong side of the line! Then he got with another hen. We gave the bird until noon but he had found shade (it was now 84 deg!). The short of the rest of the day was that we moved on a few more gobblers but never got them fired up (with hens) and it got up to 89 deg (was it April or August ). At 3:30 we called it a day with the t-storms coming and I think that was wise after seeing how bad they were. All in all a great day and my young hunting buddy is hooked! Already talking about another hunt later in the season and next year!!! I encourage everyone to take a youngster out turkey hunting. I've done it the past 2 opening days and will try to keep doing it as long as I can find kids that want to go!! |
