Dad and Son Double Up On Gobblers - Posted for GS1946
Well we started walking through the field in total darkness and was suprised to hear two gobble so early. They would gobble every five or so minutes and we kept working our way to them. We finally sat down at a tree that was only about 70yds from the tree where they were roosting. After a short while we both decided it was a bad set-up, it was in the middle of a big briar thicket. We could see some open timber on the ridge the other side of the roosted gobblers, so we worked our way around towards the top of the ridge. On the way the toms kept gobbling making it easy for us keep up with their location. We eased around on the back side of the ridge so as not to get silhouetted. We found a tree that we both could sit, it was a little farther away from the roosted gobblers. The ridge was flat and very open a lot better place for the gobblers to pich down to. We could see the gobblers every time they cut loose, but never heard a single hen.. we truely were in the catbirds seat! In just a few minutes they both flew down in a little swag. Travis made a soft cluck and yelp they both answered with a gobble. Travis whispered... they're coming, shoot first the one on the left and I'll take the one on the right. Thats exactly what we did... a texbook hunt!!
Two gobblers down! A great hunt with a bonus, both gobblers had double beards!
Mine - 22# Beards 10"& 5" Spurs 1"
Travis's - 18# Beards 11 1/4" & 5" Spurs 1"
I think they were twins.
