Post subject:  Two nice birds from Georgia this weekend

Was invited back to the place I have hunted for several years that is near the Florida -Georgia line. My Alabama trip fell through so I Just hunted Georgia this year. Long story short. Birds did not gobble at all when they hit the ground; proabbaly a result of the big cold snap and strong north east wind(low 30's both mornings) that follwed two weeks of near 80 degree weather there..Birds totally henned. Opening morning after the birds hit the ground, I followed birds to a field. Get set up . Watch two strutting gobblers and twenty hens from 125 yards and try to call enough to keep my name in the pot. Had a gobbler come in silently out of a swamp that was behind me , to five yards beside me, on the wrong shoulder, and I moved slightly and he was gone, without putting. Eventually after more than an hour the field flock came my way after a little aggressive calling and the two big birds trailed the hens by me as they left the field. Biggest gobbler went down a t 25 yards. Beard was 10.875, one spur was 1.5, and the other 1.375, both daggers. Later, took a friend back to the same field , as a shooter, and he killed the another big gobbler that came in alone at midday and it was just slightly smaller than my first one. Here are pictures of the spurs and of the two gobblers...mine is on the left. My host did not kill a bird fro the first time in many many years on the Georgia opening weekend. I would rate it as the toughest condtions I have seen there for a opener.

Good job GN! Are you hunting east or middle Tn this weekend? I will be in Grainger County. A fellow i hunt with some took his son on the juvy hunt and the birds were really gobbling on the roost and then for about the first hour. Henned up pretty good. I will still be out there. Warmer temps and maybe decent weather!
