I saw some turkey leg bands for sale on Ebay the other day. That's the first time I'd ever even heard of it.

I know they banded turkeys a long time ago when doing trap and transfer projects but I haven't heard of any lately. I have some leg bands from the NWTF banquets though!

I don't know anyone that's ever killed a turkey with a band...

I know they put some Radios in some gobblers they netted last year in WV.. the DNR man himslef told me about it right after season went out last year, they radioed 5 gobblers on one farm about this time last year.. they had two harvested in season, two were still on the same farm and alive.. and tracked one Gobbler that traveled over 20 miles in two weeks right before the season came in.. I laughed because I didn't believe him.. I've never heard of a turkey going that far.. I then ask him if he sure that he wasn't in the back of some poachers truck doing that traveling and then the carcus discarded.. but he told me that he was still alive.. still not sure I beieve it .. :)

There's a banding project going on in PA, NY, and OH. Here's a link about it.

Anything closer, I don't want to carry her out of state if I don't have to.

I was at an outing this past Sat and Larry Crane from the VDGIF was asked this very question. He stated that in Pulaski County some hens have been banded and some gobblers have been banded and transmittered as part of a localized study. He did not elaborate though.

In this month's VA Game & Fish, there's an article by Bruce Ingram that takes a few paragraphs to discuss some radio-tracking of Virginia turkeys done last spring. There were 35 radio-ed west of the Blue Ridge and something like 25 east.

I've heard by word of mouth, that somebody, I don't know if it's state or feds, but they put new radio transmitters on turkeys around their necks to try and get a measurement on how many times they gobble. Somehow this thing goes off of vibrations or something. That came from pretty reliable source. Just thought it was interesting, hope I get a chance to blow one of the radios to smithereens.

Fullback... I think what you are referring to is a project by the VDGIF to study turkeys and gobbling patterns. They are actually just tracking devices on the turkeys and someone goes out and finds the turkeys and records their gobbling activity on certain days.

I'll try to dig up some more information on this and also some results that have been released.
