We popped up our blind in the middle of a field atop of a ridge. I saw a bird below the day before in the general area. Daylight breaks and I do some soft talk hoping any bird around will know we're around. Around 0630 I notice 2 hens walking out into the firleld about 200 yds out. I wake my son to let him know. A few moments later a tom emerges from the woods glowing. I start chattering with the hens and get a little talk back. They are slowly moving our way but soon look like they may just pass in front of us. I increase the talk and soon they pitch our way. The hens approach my decoys and one attacks a deke knocking it from its stake. The Tom likes this and gobbles 50 yes out. Guess they like chick fights too. Soon he's in the spread rubbing against the standing decoy. He moves to one side, I call he comes partially out of strutt and boom, bird down. 19 lb, 10" beard and 1 1/8" spurs. Good bird and we're happy. last year was horrible so quite a good start to this year. More to follow....
