Post Long Spurs old friends Cedar Run is just one of those places
I have been struggling a bit here in Central VA, I did have a miss the second week and called one up for my son that came in behind us and we scared it. This past weekend I went north to some of my old stomping grounds. I hunted with my old friend Matt and visited with another friend Joe. Matt and I got after them starting Saturday morning and came real close, but he stayed just out of range. Then that afternoon Matt didn't feel well and had to get some fluids in him so I went over to one of my old spots. Setup at 4:00 (I don't hunt many afternoons, maybe only done it twice since they started doing it in VA) but decided to try it, glad I did. Got him to gobble at around 5:10, he was across Cedar Run in a field that Matt has permission to as well, but the run was up from the rain on Friday, so no way to wade it. I would get on my Lonnie Sneed Slate call pretty heavy and he would hammer.. I worked him for 20 minutes and he moved from behind me on the left to behind me on my right and right by the run. I called again and nothing. I thought either he flew the creek or he lost interest, cause he was answering every call to that point. 25 seconds later I cut my eyes right and saw two of them step into my field. The second one saw the jake deke and marched past the first bird and went to work on the decoy, the other bird shied off to the right a little so I decided to kill the one that was beating up the deke. Dead at 5:30 PM. He ended up being one of the bigger spurred Turkeys I have ever killed. 1 and 7/16 inch spurs, 17.5 lbs, 10 inch beard. Awesome time with old friends and awesome hunt. I came close again on Sunday, crawled on one to 50 yds, but just never felt great about the shot through some junk so I didn't take it.

We use to have some awesome hunts back in the day on a couple farms in nokesville along Cedar Run. Now just million dollar homes

I've done a couple afternoon hunts but never had that kind of response, awesome. Congrats.
