Post Stepping on Some Neck in Bluemont!
Well, I’ve had two close calls so far this season. Opening day had a bird just below the rise at 30 yds drumming for 30 mins. Never crested the hill and then just wandered off.
Yesterday had a bird fly down and land 25 yds away w two hens. They landed in thick cover and then worked their way off never giving me a shot.
Well, today was my turn. Windy up on the mountain (8-10 mph w 20 mph gusts).
Nothing gobbling before fly down, but heard some birds down the side of the mountain around 0630. Worked around above them and gave a few yelps and they hammered back. Ten minutes later a hen comes through and as soon as she was out of sight I could hear the leave’s crunch as two gobblers came behind her.
Saw the beard on the first bird and rose up just a touch to clear a fallen tree and he sees my move and periscopes.
Too late.
Nice bird 10” beard, 17.5#, and 1” ivory spurs

Used my new phone mount I posted about earlier.
Love it.

Cool. Looks like the gun mount worked great. I used to have a great spot in Bluemont to hunt but have since moved to WV.

You hardly knocked any bark off that big dead limb!!!

Congratulations on a fine mountain bird. You have other inventory if I read the post correctly. You will be done by The Weekend. Hope they behave for you. Good video , and when he ran that head up it was quick. could you see him behind that log. I’m looking on a phone so I can tell much on details!

Thanks, GN. Yeh, a hen came by first from left to right and I could hear them walking about 60 secs behind her. I could see his body (and long beard) through the sideways fork in the downed tree, so he was in my sights the whole time. You can see he caught me raising the gun up about 3” to clear the log and he and periscopes, but he was too late.
