Post Random thoughts and observations.
We used to have quite a few whippoorwills on our property. Went a few years without hearing any at all but, two years ago, I heard 4-5 different birds. Then last year it dropped to 2 birds and I've only heard one so far this year. Also, the crow population seems to be way down in our area.
On the other hand, we have owned the property since 1960 and I never heard a barred owl until about 5 years ago. Now there are 5-6 birds that I know of.
We used to have 3 coveys of quail there but they have been gone for 25 years. The grouse have all but vanished and I will see one every now and again.
The turkey population has been up and down but I've been worried about them for the last few years as they were down for a long time. This year, however, they seem to be back in pretty good numbers.

Whippoorwills in a couple of areas I hunt are thick as thieves. One spot in Montgomery county I have a log I sit on, pre-dawn to wait for the woods t come alive. Twice I’ve had a whippoorwill land on the log beside me. Another area I call whippoorwill hollow as they will make your ears bleed.

Other areas they’ve seemed to have moved on due to the maturing forests.
