 Strong finish Was able to punch my final 2 tags this past week on what has been probably the most frustrating and head scratching season. I have hunted both of these birds since opening week and at a couple points left them to hunt other birds just to get a change of scenery. Off to Massachusetts on Thursday to give them a try for the first time, so hopefully they are acting a little better than what they have been here. Re: Strong finish Congratulations, tagging out is an even greater accomplishment this year than usual! My experience has been like that of most, less gobbling and less responsiveness to calling than usual.
I looked through the pictures and descriptions on this board of the spurs of birds reported killed in VA this year and every description or picture indicates age of 3 years or greater. Even allowing for the fact that longer/sharper spurs are more likely to be mentioned or photographed, I think there just aren't many 2-year-olds this year and what we are seeing is just normal old gobbler behavior. I believe that there was a forecast for lots of jakes and fewer 2-year-olds from the DWR biologist this year and if so it appears they were correct.
