Odd year
Was good to see many had a great year. I managed to squeak a couple birds out, but had many more slip from our grasp. I hunted WV this year, 4 days, never head a roost gobble. Just got back from my place in PA, never heard a roost gobble there either. Managed to yelp up 2 in WV and 1 in PA, but they wouldn't close the distance. Got them close, but they did not come close enough for a shot. I think both places were boogered up when I got there. One honey hole in WV was devoid of birds. When we set up, I heard a 4 wheeler coming into the area about 300 yards out. I then heard a gobble, think from a gobble tube and later heard the 4 wheeler drive off. Was weird. Anyway, it seems many are trying their hand at turkey hunting, which is good, but on the other side, they can certainly mess things up. Up the road I had poachers that I think took out a couple birds 3 days before season even opened. Bummer.
I guess we all have years like this. My turn.
I also called 3 long beards to my son. They got to 20 yards, his right front, and started to cluck. He was a little freaked out and never did shoot. I talked to him about this and he said he didn't think he could move and get a shot off. Was a good learning moment, wish I taught him better before hand. After the birds walked off we repositioned and I called them back but still didn't get a shot because they stayed out around 50 yards. Mannnn.
So, an unusual year for me. Called 10 birds into range but only harvested 2. Oh well, always next year.
Happy for all who connected. V
