Pretty Nice Bird in NOVA
the season has been tough so far with no birds roosting on the property I'm hunting. I hunted the first 4 days and only heard distant gobbles on other properties and hardly no roost gobbling. Wed morning I decided to change things up a bit and go to a little 20 Acre wood lot that I hadn't hunted yet this year. Ground Hog day all over again no roosted birds and not hearing anything on the properties around me. I was getting a little disappointed and around 8 AM made a few soft calls with my pot call and Bam I hear one gobble so I hit him with a few more love tunes and he cut me off with a double gobble. He had closed the distance in a hurry. I waited for him to let me know where he was and when gobbled again he was right on top of me but I couldn't see him. He was gobbling at every sound in the woods now. Next thing you know I hear two more bird gobble to my right and i can see them strutting in the logging road about 75 yards away all the while this other bird who showed up first is coming unglued double and triple gobbling and I cant see him. Finally I see the top of his fan on the same road as the other two birds but behind some briars and bushes. the two other birds wanted nothing to do with this Tom they stayed away but strutted and gobbled 50-60 times. Finally I make some real soft purrs on my slate and here he comes taking his time strutting in the whole way and just really vocal. I let him get to 35 yards and the Benelli 20 Ga ended the fun. What the highs and lows of Turkey hunting can do to person is unexplainable. the bird weighed 23 Lbs 10 Oz 11 1/2" beard and 1 3/8 spurs. PS Look at the spur picture and you can see feathers stuck in it no wonder the others stayed back.

Sounds like that 20 acres is the ticket. Congrats on a great bird. Sounds like an awesome hunt
