Post 4400 miles one way for an opening day bird

After missing out on Spring 2017 - I made a return to the mountains of Virginia to hunt a familiar spot and see family and friends while home. It was GREAT. Opening day was scripted out perfect, I only wish it could have lasted longer as I pulled the trigger around 6:45am. This was one of those textbook hunts that spoil you. No hens creating conflict. Beautiful weather. Semi-Total Confidence in setup from roost. Bird pitched down and strutted and spit/drummed the whole 80 yards to gun range. Show ended at 28 steps. No decoys. Just woods and topography. Nice 2 year old, 1" spurs, 8.75" beard. Not sure of the weight, left my digital scale in Kodiak, but it was a healthy heavy bird. If the picture comes out, that is my father sitting on the step behind me. He and my mother are coming to visit me in June, maybe I can get them on a Chinook or some Sockeyes! They will both be running!

The tornado warnings and flooding kept my access to the mountain boogered up Monday and Tuesday with high water, but it left for time to help my parents around their home/landscaping.
I'm back in Alaska now, ya'll have fun and be safe - Good Luck!

i dont need a photo to picture you to top of that mountain with that nice bird draped over a log, its beard hanging long and straight over the front of the log. Ive seen that picture may times on this board over the years. It is a totally refreshing experience to see a picture of a hunter and a turkey when that man has kill a bird he's perhaps walked three miles up a steep access one way to call in and harvest . A true tenth legion mountain turkey man, always was , always will be I suspect . Congratulations

What a great hunt under miserable conditions. Congratulations on a well deserved bird.
