Post MD Bird Down
Second day of the season in MD today, yesterday i sat against this same tree and had a bird and his harem gobble from 5:45 till 7:30 before any of them flew down, very weird i thought. He wouldn't answer me but once yesterday before they flew down and went away off the property. Set my back against the same tree this morning and settled in with avian jake and hen 20 yards out in the short rye field in front of me. At 6:01 he gobbles but today he is a little deeper than yesterday, maybe 100 yards. I wait until i hear hens start to talk before i call and when i do he answers right away. Better result than yesterday when he would mostly only answer his real hens. Today just the opposite, different call, different day, different disposition, different bird, any or all of the above, who ever knows. Yesterday i played it easy with him but i can only hunt this farm Monday thru Thursday so i decided to hit him pretty hard with the calling and he seemed to eat it all up. About 6:30 a couple birds take flight and sail out of the woods and land down the field to my right about 150 yards away and begin to feed away from me, both hens. He hadn't gobbled in a few minutes so i assumed he was on the ground but i just wasn't sure where, in the woods or did he sail into my field out of sight somewhere. I thought about calling to check him but about that time he comes running in from my left along the field and right to the jake, when he turned away from me i settled the gun and let the 11-87 do its job. Nice 2 year old eager gobbling bird. 20 lb 7 ounce, 9 1/4 inch beard and 7/8ths sharp spurs.

Different bird? mmmmm. Sounds like it could be. I believe the spot will need more investigation especially with all those hens present. Congrats!

Great start. Congratulations on a fine bird. That one pic looks like you are trying to fan in another one.
