Remembered reading several posts this spring regarding the number of rattlesnakes encountered on the trips to Texas in turkey season, so thought I'd share this with you all. I just returned from a quail hunting trip to west Texas (Snyder / Gail area), where they experienced more rain than has been seen in the last 140+ years. In trips past, you'd see the washes and dry creeks and know sometimes in years past they must have experienced significant rain / flooding.....I can now say I have witnessed it first hand. We watched it rain Saturday through Wednesday, and hunted only brief spells during that time when the rain slacked up. On Monday around lunch the dogs pointed a covey of quail in a little draw, on Wednesday afternoon there was ten feet of water over the same spot. It was unbelievable to see the amount of run off and flash flooding that took place. With all the water present, it pushed a lot of rattle snakes out of their den. On Wednesday afternoon when the sun came out, we found one area infested with rattlesnakes. Between the ranch manager and myself we removed 66 rattlesnakes in two days. Very fortunate that we didn't have a person or dog bitten. Also did see where a gang of gobblers had been through the ranch on Friday, lot of tracks and a few gobbler breast feathers where spotted. Never saw the flock, probably because I spent most of time looking at the ground immediately around me.
