I have a 3 year old that loves to do everything I do and it is great. However, I took a few days off to hunt and he asked me where I was going. I told him that “daddy was hunting and chasing turkeys and deer” (I will spend a couple of days away from home at our small family farm) he thought it was great and still asks me about it. I had some luck, but my son was at home and could not see my kill. It has always been a tradition to turkey hunt on Thanksgiving morning. My family is going to be there also and we have a good line on some birds. I have never had him around when I had a dead animal to clean. If I get one and bring it home how should I approach it.? I am trying not to use words like “kill” or “shot” ust because I don't think he is ready for them YET! Maybe I am just overeacting but I am worried about explaining a dead animal and how I got him. My wife is okay with it, and has left it up to me to handle. I just want to do the right thing. Maybe my biggest concern is how I am going to get the turkey to begin with! haha!

I take my 3 year old girl with me and she is around the deer that I kill. She loves to help daddy. I haven't had the opportunity to shoot a deer while she was with me yet. Maybe too much movement in the blind.lol But she handles it fine and the kill and shot terminology should be ok. Just explain everything to her and theres going to be a lot of questions.

Personally I would tell it to him, just like it is. I would not hesitate to use the words kill or shoot, that's what we hunters do. Lets call a spade a spade.
My little boy appreciates the honesty of the situation, when I tell him about my hunting explotes.
Certain questions will arise from this honesty, but that gives you a great opportunity to talk about things like respect for the game, eating what you shoot, ect...
My little boy (6 years old)goes hunting w/ me from time to time and when we kill somthing together(hasn't happened yet). I will field dress it in front of him without hesitation.
You will not scar him for life ...Trust me

Birdman make sure you just keep talking to the kids. My 4 year old loves it. Now she asks me all the time about questions I have to think about before I answer. She likes to watch me skin and cut up deer. I tell her it is OK to kill if we eat the animal and dont waste it. It is hard for her to understand at times about killing but she tells her mom all the time she wants to hunt with daddy. I have taken her and she had fun. She got to see a deer and a turkey while actually hunting so it was great. She also likes to eat venison so that is a bonus.

i agree with hody, keep talking and explaining.they understand more than you give them credit for.my son has been envolved in hunting since he was two,the first deer he saw dead he did everything but crawl up in the chest cavity,if anything i think it taught him about life and death at an early age, witch i think has helped with teaching him gun saftey,he fully understands what can happen if he's not safe.heres a pic of him and two deer his grandpa shot while he was sitting with him a few years ago before he started carrying a gun
