Headed out yesterday to the GW National Forest for my first deer hunt, carrying along my 12GA loaded with slugs. I went to a place I had hiked before a couple times and where I had scouted some spots this spring while turkey hunting. Anyway, got set up a little late but had a great position with a little ridge that elevated me to a fairly open area and a deer run about 25 - 35 yards in front going diagonal. Lots of acorns around and a whole colony of squirrels all around me. Less than 3 minutes after sitting down a nice doe passed by within 25 yards so I knew this must be a great place. Waited about an hour and a real young buck comes walking right up the same trail, just like the doe had. His antlers were barely over his ears and he was quite small. I didn't want to go home empty handed, but decided it was probably best to let the little guy go so I passed on him. He passed by not 20 yards from me and never seemed to notice me at all! I waited until about 11am during which time I saw two hens about 50 yards off - very cool.
Anyway, didn't bring one home but had a great trip and have now marked what seems like a great spot. Many thanks to all on this board which has provided a wealth of knowledge to a guy trying to learn the ropes! |

Congrats on a successful first hunt. Sounds like you've done a good job scouting and keeping scent to a minimum. If the does are there, so are the bucks with the rut on. Just put in the time and you'll connect. Don't shy away from killing a doe on doe day(s). As deer hunters, we must all do our part to help keep the male/female ratio under control. Plus, the doe will be better table fare in my opinion. |

Thanks, Dale. I'm hoping to get out on the 27th to the same spot, but I'm a little concerned that it will be a little crowded. If I do make it out there I'll definitely kill a doe if I get the chance! |
