Teen hunter mistakes man for deer A Norfolk man was shot in the stomach Friday in a wooded area of Charles City County. CHARLES CITY -- A Norfolk man was wounded Friday morning when a teenager accidentally shot him with a .50-caliber muzzleloading rifle while hunting. Carl William George Viviano, 28, was carrying a tree stand in a wooded area of the county early Friday when a 16-year-old Poquoson boy mistook him for a deer, said Julia Dixon, spokeswoman for the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Viviano was hit in the lower abdomen and was taken to the VCU Medical Center in Richmond, formerly known as Medical College of Virginia Hospitals. Viviano was listed in stable condition Saturday night, said hospital spokesman Joe Kuttenkuler. The game department is still investigating the incident, Dixon said, but apparently the teenager thought the shape made by Viviano carrying the tree stand resembled a deer. "I can tell you that's no excuse," Dixon said. She said the burden is on the shooter to determine whether he is shooting at wildlife or a person. A muzzleloader is an older-style firearm in which powder and shot are packed into the rifle's muzzle. Dixon said she could not speak to the investigation of this case, but that hunting accidents can lead to charges ranging from reckless handling of a firearm to manslaughter if the victim dies. |

A friend of mine was there on Friday and he said he saw an ambulance going back into Chickahominy about 2:00 or 2:30. So that may be about Chickahominy. That is really scary! I was going to go out there on the 15th and 16th for gun, but I don't know if I will now or not. |

Thats scary, I have been down to Chickahominy and hunted alot of times during gun season. When I hunt there... if im hunting morning I either go in way before everyone else or I go in after the sun comes up. I sit in my treestand early morning and will hear people shoot when I cant even see whats below me! So im like wtf are they shooting at, cuz I know they cant see a deer. I remember last year during turkey season I spoke with someone who was telling me that some he was out turkey hunting and was making some calls and some guy who was taking his son out for the first time let his son take a shot at where the sound was coming from and he shot the tree that the other guy was sitting on the other side of. It honestly doesnt suprise me, im sure there will be atleast one more accident like that before the seasons over. That or once gun season starts people are going to be shooting other guys dogs. |
