Grand nephew need a theoretical adult to sit with him in a stand on the first day of juvenile season in Tenn. At 57, and never having been on a deer hutn in my life ,that was me, the stand sitter, gun bearer, and accomplice... In the stand early, 45 minutes before daylight. Not sure the 15 foot ladder on that thing was built for anybody who weighed more than a hundred pounds....as it turned ouit the most ecxcitemnet of the day was to see wheteher it would hold me fro the trip up and down. Anyway, we were there plenty early, and faced a 40 acre green field from a vantage point that should have been prime for any moving deer, as I have seen them pass throug right under our stand location on many mornings while duck hunting a flooded creek in a lower edge of the same field. My shooter had a 20 guage loaded with slugs, so they would have to be close to get a good shot. It was super windy on that full moon , but the best woods was slightly upwind, so we felt like we had a chance. After daylight came, and two hours passed, my shooter started wondering where his father and brother were and then we climbed out. Never saw the first deer. Scouting (or the absence of it)may have something to so with it, you think? |

SEE, that didn't hurt now did it? Next trip they will introduce a Doe, and future trips after that will be a button Buck, and then a yearling, all the way up to and including a giant Ten Point Buck! After that your aversion therapy will be complete, and you will be cured of your Deer Phobia!

MF-I will just concentate on getting the bait for the strippers.....course I keep turning it loose...I did find myself cheering for the Hokies the other night, so I guess anything is possible. |

I'm proud of you GN for setting aside your personal feelings on hunting the 4 legged deer for the benefit of a young hunter. Who ever said old dogs don't learn new tricks! Put a smile on my face today! |

You're a hoot. Good news is that if this is your mid-life crisis you get to live to be 114!
Please consider drawing the line at rifle hunting the BIRD. That would just be over the top and we would all worry that you would have reached the point of no return. |

You could always take him w/ you, getting him hooked on grouse hunting! I'll bet he could learn to feed dogs w/ the best of 'em. Besides, a young pair of legs can be real handy in the mountains. |

You know how hard it is today to get somebody interested in grouse hunting when you cannot show them any grouse? Seriously, that is the issue facing many bird hunters today...you cannot find enough wild birds in the east to either train a dog or to interest a youngster in the dogs and the hunt. Out west there is aworld of public land and enough game birds to fire up a kid, not so here. My two grand-nephews do duck hunt with us some and do turkey hunt and deer hunt with their Dad. |
